Class 5 Gravel Specifications & Properties

Class 5 is a graded aggregate base defined by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) under Specification 3138. It consists of crushed limestone particles ranging from ¾-inch stone down to fine dust, blended at specific ratios so the material self-binds under compaction.

Technical Specifications

PropertyClass 5 Standard
Maximum Aggregate Size¾ inch (19 mm)
CompositionCrushed limestone with graded fines
Compaction BehaviorSelf-binding under mechanical compaction
DrainageGood — allows water percolation while maintaining stability
WeightApproximately 1.4 tons per cubic yard

What Makes Class 5 Different from Other Aggregates

The critical difference is the fines content — the small crusite dust and sand-sized particles mixed in with the larger stone. When you compact Class 5, those fines fill the gaps between larger rocks and lock everything into a rigid, interlocking matrix. This is why Class 5 holds up under vehicle traffic and equipment loads where decorative gravel, pea rock, or washed stone would rut and shift.

Class 5 vs. Class 1

Class 1 aggregate uses larger stone (up to 1.5 inches) and is designed primarily for drainage and sub-base layers deep in the road structure. Class 5 is the surface-ready base — it goes on top of Class 1 or directly on prepared subgrade. If you need one product for a driveway, parking pad, or road shoulder, Class 5 is almost always the right choice. Learn more in our full guide: Class 1 vs. Class 5 Gravel.

Class 5 vs. Recycled Asphalt Millings

We deliver both products. Recycled millings give a dark, blacktop-like appearance and soften slightly in heat, creating a semi-sealed surface. Class 5 stays firmer year-round and compacts more uniformly. Many contractors use Class 5 as the structural base and top with millings for appearance.

Why Choose Minnesota Aggregates for Class 5 Delivery?

Class 5 is a well-graded mix of rock and fines designed to compact into a firm base, which is why it’s a go-to for driveways, garage or shed pads, parking areas, and road base layers. When you order delivery, the material arrives ready to spread and compact. To keep delivery fast and smooth, make sure the dump area is clearly marked and can handle a loaded truck (firm ground, enough turning room, and no low wires or tight gates). Pricing and scheduling typically depend on yardage, delivery distance, and site access. If you want help placing and shaping the material for proper drainage and compaction, skid steer grading can be added so your base layer is even and ready for the next step of your project.

We deliver more than just gravel—we deliver confidence, convenience, and quality. Our team is committed to helping you finish your project on time and within budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Class 5 gravel used for?

Class 5 is used as a compactable base material for driveways, roads, parking lots, building pads, and utility backfill. It meets MnDOT Spec 3138 and is the standard aggregate base for both residential and commercial construction in Minnesota.

Is Class 5 gravel good for a driveway?

Yes — Class 5 is the most commonly recommended driveway base material in Minnesota. Its mix of crushed stone and fines compacts into a hard, stable surface that resists rutting and handles vehicle traffic year-round, including through freeze-thaw cycles.

How much Class 5 do I need for a driveway?

For a standard residential driveway (40 ft long × 12 ft wide × 4 inches deep), you need approximately 6 cubic yards. Use our Cubic Yardage Calculator for exact project estimates.

What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 5 gravel?

Class 1 contains larger stone (up to 1.5 inches) and is designed for deep sub-base and drainage layers. Class 5 uses smaller aggregate (¾-inch maximum) with more fines, making it the better choice for surface-level base that needs to compact tightly. For most driveway and pad projects, Class 5 is the right product. See our full comparison: Class 1 vs. Class 5 Gravel.

Can I use Class 5 as a finished driveway surface?

Yes. Many Minnesota homeowners use Class 5 as both the base and the driving surface. Once compacted, it forms a firm, clean gray surface. For a darker look, some customers top Class 5 with a thin layer of recycled asphalt millings.

How fast can you deliver?

Most orders are scheduled within 3 to 5 business days. During peak season (spring and summer), we recommend booking at least a week ahead. Contact us for current availability.

Do you offer spreading and grading?

Yes. Our skid steer services crew can spread, grade, and compact Class 5 on site. This is especially useful for homeowners who don’t have access to heavy equipment.

What does Class 5 gravel cost?

Pricing depends on quantity and delivery distance. We offer competitive per-yard rates with delivery included for the Twin Cities metro area. Request a free quote for your specific project.

Should I use Class 5 or sand as a paver base?

They serve different purposes. Class 5 is used as the structural base layer (4–6 inches deep) beneath pavers. Sand (typically concrete sand or mason sand) is the thin setting bed (1 inch) placed on top of the compacted Class 5. You need both. We deliver sand and Class 5.

What’s the difference between Class 5 and recycled Class 5?

Standard Class 5 is quarried and crushed from virgin limestone. Recycled Class 5 is made from reclaimed concrete and asphalt, crushed to the same gradation. Both compact well. Recycled Class 5 is generally more affordable. Ask us about availability.
